Genevieve Collier,
Art Therapy in Malvern

What is Art Therapy?

Art therapy uses all sorts of materials, photos, artworks, objects and talking together to explore emotions, memories, thoughts, and relationships. The therapist will help you use the materials, your senses, and your imagination to connect to different parts of yourself an d explore what you want to change. It is definitely not just for people who are ‘good at art’!
Art therapy can help in times of feeling depressed and hopeless; stress, anxiety and overwhelm; recovery from trauma; bereavement, loss, and grief; big changes at any time of life; working out who you are and what you want.

About our expert

Genevieve has been a registered art psychotherapist since 2019 and set up Malvern Community Art Therapy in 2023 with colleague Sue Wilkie. They take a person-centred, trauma informed approach to therapy, asking not ‘what is wrong with you’, but ‘what has happened to you?’.

Supporting the approach of A Disorder for Everyone , Sue and Genevieve challenge the medical approach to mental health, believing there are more helpful ways to understand emotional distress than seeing it as medical illness or disorder.

Genevieve’s approach to art therapy has been influenced by
 Training with Cornelia Elbrecht’s Sensorimotor Guided Drawing
 Trauma expert Carolyn Spring who specialises in survivors of child sexual abuse
 A Jungian-based art psychotherapy training at Roehampton University
 Our evolving understanding about the needs and wonders of neurodiverse brain types
 Working in therapeutic art communities at Studio Upstairs in London
